First we shape our buildings, then they shape us

This week’s post is framed around some experiences from this week, and some ruminations from weeks past. The title comes from a Winston Churchill quote that I have kept with me over last seven years or so from being involved in a new building design. And in light of the visits we had, some of the readings, and most importantly my own thoughts and experience, I have some thinking going on about design for formal and informal environments.
A week ago, we visited the Bishop Museum, and toured the n… Continue

NECC Postings

Just finished my visit to the National Educational Computing Conference in Washington DC. Lots of great stuff happening and learned.

A bunch of HAIS folks attended - the EdTech group form Kamehameha, Judy Beaver from Punahou (who presented as well), Curtis Ho from the UH EdTech dept. Any others there?

My blog here has the full details of my days - so far I have put up the first two days - will keep addding as I get notes organized.

Payton Dobbs June 5, 2009

At the Honolulu Board of realtors meeting on June 5, we had the chance to hear Payton Dobbs, who leads Googles effort in e-commerce. he shared seven key ideas emerging for anyone involved in thinking about technology overlays with their development. There is nothing here that is terribly groundbreaking, but what is significant is someone as high up in Google really identifying the importance of these things -- they are all relevant to our mission education and are worth taking to heart:

Aloha Mark,

Sorry I'm so lame at replying back. You guys did an outstanding job as the "Transformers!" Wish I could have filmed your tumbling act. Ha.

Anyway, looks like I'm here til May at least. That's good. I'm still truck-in along with KCCL. We're making progress too.

hey Mark, just wanted to let you know about the group I created so it can be approved. I spoke with at least two different schools that had some marine education program going and I wanted to create a place to bring them together here on our ning. hopefully that's cool!

Mark, I hope you have gotten your voice back for next Tuesday. I am really looking forward to the conference!

Question, are you planning on attending NECC in DC this summer? I like the talk about doing an official tour for year two, but if a few of us go this year it would be good to meet and debrief as well. Just curious. I haven't solidified any plans yet but I'll be on the east coast for a week or two and am considering NECC.

Hi Mark,

We would like to add another person to our Montessori Hale O Keiki team. Her name is Leslie Wilkins, she is a parent in the School who will be serving as a consultant. How can we get her on the NING? Her email address is the following: leslie@maui.com

HI Mark,
Our group was wondering if Tony's keynote will be available anytime soon. Our intention was to have our faculty view it so they could better understand the change we would like the school to undertake.
Thanks,
JoAnn

Hi Mark,
Thanks for all of your hard work in establishing the Ning and today's conference. Not only is there a great deal deal to do but so much still to learn. Today was a good start, now we just have to keep our focus and keep moving forward.
Thanks again,
JoAnn

Hi Mark,
The conference was great, and we are ready to get to work. Are you going to add the ability to create groups to the main page? We would like to use the Ning to communicate within our group about the grant.
Thanks,
Suzy
